July 12, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Kyiv Court of Appeals has transferred the espionage case against Belarusian journalist Ina Karda\u0161 to the Shevchenkivskyi District Court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally, the Podilskyi District Court of Kyiv was tasked with\u00a0hearing\u00a0the case, but its\u00a0chairperson\u00a0requested a transfer because none of the judges specializing in criminal cases possess a security clearance\u00a0to access state secrets,\u00a0while\u00a0the case\u00a0file\u00a0contains classified evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Kyiv Court of Appeals,\u00a0Karda\u0161\u00a0agreed no later than 6 September 2025 to gather information constituting Ukraine’s state secrets and pass it to the Committee of State Security of Belarus (KGB).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karda\u0161 allegedly got a job at the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War at the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine\u2019s defense ministry and used her position for the systematic collection of classified information by photographing documents and recording conversations between colleagues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 13, the Kyiv Court of Appeals upheld\u00a0a lower court\u2019s\u00a0decision\u00a0to extend\u00a0Karda\u0161\u2019\u00a0detention until June 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A defense attorney asked the court to release her client on bail, with the condition that she must not leave the country. Karda\u0161 participated in the hearing via video link from the Kyiv pretrial detention center, arguing that she should be released since, in her view, the charges were based \u201conly on assumptions and are not supported by any evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judge who extended Karda\u0161\u2019 detention until June 14 ruled that there were reasonable grounds to believe the suspect could abscond from the investigation if released, as well as potentially destroy or conceal evidence or unlawfully influence witnesses or experts involved in the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) arrested the woman in late January 2026 on suspicion of spying for Belarus\u2019 KGB. According to the SBU, she was sent from Minsk to Ukraine in 2020 to operate as an agent under the cover of journalistic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karda\u0161 reportedly obtained a job at one of Ukraine\u2019s leading media outlets before Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Using her position and professional contacts, she allegedly expanded her network among Ukrainian politicians, military personnel and foreign diplomats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SBU released several audio recordings in which the suspect is heard speaking with her presumed KGB handler, who allegedly promised her remuneration of \u20ac3,000. The agency added that the woman was tasked with collecting information on Belarusians and Russians assisting Ukraine and attempted to identify potential candidates for recruitment by the KGB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
