July 3, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The Estonian government approved a bill yesterday that would ban citizens of certain countries from purchasing real estate for security reasons, its press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, the ban would apply to Russian and Belarusian nationals who do not hold long-term residence permits or permanent residency in Estonia. It would also extend to companies registered in Russia or Belarus, as well as to legal entities registered in any country if their ultimate beneficial owners are subject to the restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill also grants the government the authority to designate countries whose ownership of real estate may threaten Estonia\u2019s security or public order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move was reportedly designed to reduce the risk of real estate in Estonia being used by hostile states for intelligence and subversive activities, the preparation of sabotage or the establishment of strategically important positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill may enter into force on January 1, 2027, after approval of MPs and signing by the Estonian president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Latvia and Finland banned people and companies from Belarus and Russia from buying properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine in which the Belarusian authorities supported the Kremlin, allowing Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions and supplying arms to Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
