June 30, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The Council of Europe (CoE) will organize a public side event at the World Congress against the death penalty on July 2 dedicated to the efforts to abolish capital punishment in Belarus, the CoE press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u00a0is the only European country that still applies the death penalty, it noted. While it is not a member state, the CoE has long advocated the abolition of capital punishment and said it will continue to make the issue a key priority in its engagement with Belarusian pro-democracy forces and exiled civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The keynote Belarusian speaker at the event will be Maksim Znak, lawyer and former political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Council of Europe opposes the death penalty. Everywhere. Under all circumstances. And it will continue to do so until universal abolition,\u201d stressed CoE Secretary General Alain Berset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ninth World Congress against the death penalty is taking place in Paris from June 30 to July 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
