June 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> An interactive discussion of a report<\/a> on the situation in Belarus will take place in Geneva on June 29 within the framework of the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the official UN Human Rights Council Draft Program of Work, the initial oral updates and Interactive Dialogues for specific country mandates, including Belarus, begin on Monday, June 29. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report is expected to be approved on one of the final days of the session, which started on June 15 and will run until July 7. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authored by UN Special Rapporteur Nils Mui\u017enieks, the document covers the human rights situation in Belarus from April 2025 to late March 2026. In the report, Mui\u017enieks reiterates his call on Minsk to end politicallymotivated persecution in the country and ensure implementation of all previous UN recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBelarus continues to systematically and grossly violate its international human rights obligations through ongoing politically motivated repression and a complete crackdown on freedom of expression, assembly and association,\u201d the report reads. Authorities continued to arrest, prosecute and mistreat people linked to the 2020 postelection protests, including over actions dating back several years, while also targeting their families and friends, Mui\u017enieks notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expert also points to continued reports of severe ill-treatment in prisons, the persistence of transnational repression through trials in absentia and the denial of identity documents, harassment of entire families and the misuse of counterterrorism and anti-extremism legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mui\u017enieks says that state policies have marginalized the Belarusian language, one of the country\u2019s two official languages, and politicized efforts to preserve and promote it. Reports indicate limited access to Belarusian-language books and media, while Belarusian speakers face hostility from officials during court proceedings and discrimination across different settings, he adda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expert welcomes the releases of dissidents but says authorities continued to persecute former prisoners, target exiled Belarusians and arrest people for peacefully exercising their rights. Human rights situation in Belarus showed no signs of improvement as nearly 1,000 people were still imprisoned in politically-motivated cases as of late March, he concludes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
