June 15, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Poland understands the struggle of Belarusians for democracy like no one else, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said as she received the King Eric of Pomerania Award, distinguishing special achievements in building a united Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPoland knows the power of solidarity and the importance of allies, and it is helping Belarusians and Ukrainians on their path to freedom,\u201d she said at the ceremony aired on Polish television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBelarusians and Poles share a common history and culture,\u201d she noted. \u201cWe fought together in uprisings against the Russian Empire, and our history contains no conflicts that could divide our peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland opened its doors and hearts to thousands of ordinary Belarusians, independent journalists, rights defenders, artists and business figures who were fleeing reprisals after the 2020 postelection protests in Belarus, Cichano\u016dskaja stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPoland is a model for Belarus. We want to build a strong, democratic and prosperous country like Poland. One day, we will rebuild Belarus and return to the European family of nations, to which we historically belong,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also urged Warsaw to maintain pressure on Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime until it releases all designated political prisoners, ends politically-motivated reprisals and stops supporting Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The King Eric of Pomerania Award has been presented annually since 2023. It is named after the medieval ruler of Denmark, Sweden and Norway under the Kalmar Union, who was born in what is now the Polish town of Dar\u0142owo. Previous recipients included former Polish President Aleksander Kwa\u015bniewski, former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and Jerzy Buzek, former prime minister of Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
