June 11, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka ordered Volha Anufryjeva, the newly appointed director and chief editor of the Belarus Segodnya Publishing House, to keep up its propaganda work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In addition to your main job, you will have to work with people, informing them, campaigning, spreading propaganda,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka was quoted as telling the appointee. \u201cOne should not be afraid this, everybody does it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler insisted that propagandists merely promote the \u201cnormal lifestyle that exists in Belarus.\u201d “We are all ideological workers, from journalists to the president,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are not hiding this, that is how it should be, there is nothing to hide here. Probably, this is why they criticize you, calling you propagandists, because they are envious and afraid. Well, that is good. If they are afraid, this means everything is for the best,” he said in an apparent reference to his opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volha Anufryjeva succeeded D\u017amitryj \u017duk, who was appointed as information minister two months ago. Prior to her appointment, she had served as director of the Zviazda Publishing House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As key elements of the state ideology system, the Belarus Segodnya Publishing House and the Zviazda Publishing House manage 17 newspapers and magazines, including flagship propaganda outlets SB.Belarus Segodnya<\/em>, Respublika<\/em> and Zviazda<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the historic 2020 post-election protests, the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime branded the country\u2019s independent media as \u201cextremist organizations,\u201d banished their editorial staff from Belarus and banned their content from distribution in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 21 media workers are currently behind bars in Belarus, according to the Belarusian Association of Journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
