June 9, Pozirk. <\/strong>Mohamed Addamrou, a citizen of Morocco who suspected of fatally wounding Polish Sergeant Mateusz Sitek at the border with Belarus in May 2024, is staying in Belarus, the Warsaw District Prosecutor\u2019s Office\u2019s announced on Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the prosecutor office\u2019s spokesman Piotr Skiba, more than 140 witnesses in Poland and abroad have been questioned in the investigation, and formal charges were brought against Addamrou as far back as July 21, 2025. After establishing that the man resides in Belarus, the prosecutor\u2019s office filed an extradition request with Belarusian authorities. However, the investigation had to be suspended on May 22 because the suspect\u2019s whereabouts have been designated a \u201clong-term procedural obstacle.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-one-year-old Mateusz Sitek died on June 6, 2024, after he was stabbed while on patrol duty on May 28 by a man attempting to cross from Belarus as part of a large group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk has refused to cooperate with Warsaw in the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland subsequently established a buffer zone at the Belarusian border, restricting access to some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arkadiusz Szkutnik, commander of Operation Safe Podlasie, told Wirtualna Polska in November 2024 that the suspect was staying in the European Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators have identified the suspect and have his photo, Szkutnik said. The man has been spotted in France and Belgium, so it is only a matter of time before he is arrested, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The general also said that Polish border guards have identified migrants who threw stones at soldiers and fired slingshots. The list of suspected violent offenders currently includes 42 people, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian pro-democracy movement blamed Sitek\u2019s death on the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the spring of 2021, a migration crisis has been ongoing at Belarus\u2019 border with the EU. Poland, Latvia and Lithuania call it a hybrid attack organized by Minsk and Moscow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
