June 4, Pozirk.<\/strong> Belarus’ bison population has increased nearly fivefold over the past two decades to 2,927 animals, Mika\u0142aj Vananiecki, in charge of wildlife protection, has told journalists in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roe deer population has tripled, while the numbers of red deer and moose have also increased, he added, citing data from the environment ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus had 1,289 brown bears and 2,556 lynx in early 2026, said Alaksandar Kazarez, a department head at the forestry ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wild animals in Belarus are increasingly entering populated areas in search of food, a trend driven partly by climate change, said Lizaveta Reut, a consultant with the ministry’s department of biological and landscape diversity. She also pointed to growing wildlife populations as a significant factor behind the increased number of sightings of wild animals near human settlements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the Belarusian environment ministry reclassified the European bison, bear and lynx to a lower-risk category, from vulnerable to near threatened. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2025, Belarusian authorities lifted a ban on bear hunting, citing a rise in the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
