June<\/strong> 2, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/strong> <\/strong>Attempts by third-country nationals to cross the border into the European Union from Belarus outside the official checkpoints hit a seven-month high in May, according to Pozirk\u2019s<\/em> analysis of data from border guard services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the 1,583 incidents reported last month, Latvia accounted for 94.2 percent, Lithuania for 4.2 percent and Poland, which used to be a target for irregular migration for years, for 1.7 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania reported 5.447 irregular crossing attempts this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
