June 2, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> It took nearly a month for a Belarusian opposition activist \u2014 wanted by Belarus and Russia \u2014 to obtain the necessary permissions in Armenia to leave the country for Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man, who says his persecution is politically motivated, was briefly detained at the Armenian border on May 3 after being placed by Belarus on the Eurasian Economic Union\u2019s wanted persons list. He was released later the same day following the intervention of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told Pozirk<\/em>, on condition of anonymity, that he has since been allowed to leave Armenia and re-enter Georgia without impediment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armenian human rights activists and Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s office worked together to resolve the issue ahead of the Belarusian politician\u2019s visit to Armenia, which hosted the European Political Community summit on May 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man said he faces politically motivated criminal charges in Belarus. Law enforcement officers reportedly harassed his mother in an attempt to determine his whereabouts, claiming that her son had committed theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of shared database systems, Armenia has previously detained at least seven Belarusian opposition activists, according to Leanid Maroza\u016d from Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s legal team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, Armenia rejected several requests to extradite Belarusians wanted for political reasons, despite Andrej \u0160vied, then Belarusian prosecutor general, raising the issue during a meeting with his Armenian counterpart, Anna Vardapetyan, in Yerevan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Alen Simonyan, the Armenian parliamentary speaker, said that no one would be detained or deported to any country for political reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armenia has been pursuing closer ties with the European Union under Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who came to power in 2018 following mass protests against the country\u2019s former leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
