May 29, Pozirk. <\/strong>Belarus\u2019 interior ministry has added 19 new names to its list of people it considers \u201cinvolved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total to 6,650 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The updated list features prominent musician Aleh Chamienka sentenced to three years in prison in connection with his work as a show host for the Belarusian-language radio station Radyjo Racyja<\/em>. He was found guilty of facilitating extremism because the station had been labeled by Belarus\u2019 security services as an extremist group among dozens of other blacklisted media organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentences of 11 recently blacklisted persons remain incomplete, which could mean that they may be serving non-custodial terms. They are Jana Halimskaja, Ryhor Ta\u0142ka\u010do\u016d, Kiry\u0142 \u0141ojka, Jahor Krycki, Ja\u016dhien Prakop\u010dyk, Pavie\u0142 Kaz\u0142o\u016d, Natalla Hi\u0144ko, Alaksandar Kandratovi\u010d, Siarhiej \u0160ynhirej, Andrej Abakun\u010dyk and Pavie\u0142 Kaz\u0142o\u016d. They all face extremism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight persons are serving sentences on charges ranging from inciting hatred and insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka to violent disorder and facilitating extremist activities. They are Hanna Strukava, Halina Fralova, Volha Bajko\u016dskaja, Volha Vo\u0161\u010danka, Aleh Stefanovi\u010d, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Sinkievi\u010d, Alaksandar Zubryk, Alaksandar Char\u010danka and Chamienka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
