May 28, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The World Karate Federation and International University Sports Federation (FISU) have lifted all restrictions on Belarusian athletes, the Belarusian Ministry of Sports reported on May 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFollowing the recent recommendations made by the International Olympic Committee and due to diverse positioning from the International Sports Federations, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) immediately adopts a uniform eligibility framework to ensure consistency across its competitions,\u201d FISU said<\/a> in its statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe International University Sports Federation Executive Committee has decided today to reinstate student-athletes with a Belarusian passport at all its events with immediate effect, in line with the IOC\u2019s 7 May 2026 recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs far as Russian student-athletes are concerned, the situation is more complex. The IOC has not lifted its senior restrictions for Russian athletes but recommends that youth athletes should not be held accountable for the actions of their governments, a position that strongly resonates with student-athletes,\u201d it went on to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FISU ruled that the outright exclusion of Russian student-athletes on grounds of nationality alone is considered disproportionate and inconsistent with FISU\u2019s educational mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neutrality conditions \u2013 participation without national flag, uniform, etc. \u2013 constitute the maximum restriction applicable at any FISU event. At the same time, where the applicable international federation has fully reinstated Russian athletes, FISU mirrors that position. Russian student-athletes may therefore, depending on the sport and the applicable IF position, be eligible to participate at FISU events under full national conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for Belarusian athletes, they are eligible to take part in the 2027 World University Games that will be held in South Korea in summer and China in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All restrictions on Belarusian athletes have been also lifted by the World Dance Sport Federation, the World Confederation of Billiards Sports, the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation, the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, World Gymnastics, European Gymnastics, the International Volleyball Federation and World Boxing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the International Tennis Federation and World Athletics have maintained restrictions imposed in connection with Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine and the Belarusian regime\u2019s role in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
