May 27, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on May 26, as law enforcers searched the homes of two exiled people from \u015amilavi\u010dy in the Minsk district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of them faces charges of facilitating extremist activities in Belarus, while the other reportedly participated in the Freedom Day rallies abroad earlier this year, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials kept harassing the family of exiled activist Natalla Papkova. Over the past three months, police raided the homes of her relatives twice and threatened with more searches. Papkova faces new criminal charges in Belarus over an online comment from 2020, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Law enforcers sealed and seized the apartment of former designated political prisoner Ja\u016dhien Kis\u0142o\u016d, who was freed last December in a deal between Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Washington and taken out of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orthodox priest Hieorhij Roj said on Facebook that he is wanted in Belarus on extremism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a different development, the Supreme Court heard an appeal against the sentence handed down to Vadzim Kryva\u0161eje\u016d, ex-head of the Olympic freestyle skiing center, sentenced to 12 years in prison without being present at the trial, Viasna said. Authorities persecuted him on charges widely seen as politically motivated. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of reprisals documented in Belarus yesterday included a \u201cterrorist\u201d designation for jailed dissident Volha Strojeva, who is serving a five-year prison term on charges of inciting hatred, calling for sanctions, facilitating extremist activities and insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 information ministry added 17 books, including romance novels, to its list of \u201cpublications whose dissemination can cause damage to national interests,\u201d taking the total of entries to 258. The same ministry also blacklisted two Threads accounts as \u201cextremist\u201d content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) expressed deep concerns over the health of jailed journalist Kiry\u0142 Pa\u017aniak, who was hospitalized in serious condition after more than eight months in detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of May 27, human rights defenders identified at least 839 political prisoners, but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
