May 12, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has pointed out difficult working conditions for nurses in Belarus in her message on the occasion of International Nurses Day, her press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNurses are often the first to see patients, the first to notice when something is wrong and the ones making dozens of critical decisions throughout a shift,\u201d she said. Nurses often work 20-hour shifts in overcrowded wards, rushing between floors, while night shifts can involve monitoring five critically ill patients at once, the politician added, noting that patients sometimes see nurses as \u201ctheir last hope.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe salary of nurses is too low to even mention out loud,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said, calling for fair pay and respect to the profession. \u201cIt\u2019s as if the system is telling them: your sense of responsibility is enough for us, nothing more is needed. But it shouldn\u2019t be that way. Responsibility is no substitute for decent working conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of May 12, the Belarusian employment service\u2019s website listed 1,800 job openings for nurses, including 645 in Minsk alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the 2020 political crisis in Belarus, many healthcare workers fled the country, fearing politically-motivated persecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
