May 8, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Police have identified five individuals suspected of links to the Anarchist Black Cross Belarus, recently designated as an \u201cextremist group,\u201d according to the interior ministry\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are Valeryja Chocina, Ihar Baha\u010dak, Maryna Kastylan\u010danka, Alena Dubovik and Maryna Dubina. None of them appear to be currently resident in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a pro-government Telegram channel reported on May 7, the Anarchist Black Cross Belarus has been blacklisted for plotting against the \u201csovereignty and public security\u201d of Belarus and for \u201cdiscrediting and insulting\u201d officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrej Ananienka, Belarus\u2019 anti-organized crime police chief, in an interview published on March 31, claimed complete victory over the country\u2019s anarchist movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present there are 366 \u201cextremist groups\u201d on the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime\u2019s register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 post-election protests, authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On its website, the Anarchist Black Cross Belarus says that it provides support to anarchists and \u201csocial activists \u201cwhose ideas and activities do not run counter to the ideas of anarchism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Anarchist Black Cross is an international network of anarchist organizations that supports political prisoners. The movement originated in the early twentieth century in the Russian Empire as the Anarchist Red Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group provides prisoners with political literature and also organizes material and legal support for class struggle prisoners worldwide. It commonly contrasts itself with Amnesty International, which is concerned mainly with prisoners of conscience and refuses to defend those accused of encouraging violence. The Anarchist Black Cross openly supports those who have committed illegal activity in furtherance of revolutionary aims that anarchists accept as legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anarchism is a political philosophy that argues society should exist without a central government or imposed authority. It believes hierarchies like the state, coercive governments, or oppressive institutions are unnecessary or harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
