May 1, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The state must protect the right to work, not turn it into a tool of control, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said on International Workers\u2019 Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work in Belarus too often goes hand in hand with fear of contractual dependence, dismissal for political views and punishments for activism, she noted on Telegram, adding that people \u201cshould not have to choose between bread and conscience,\u201d while employment should \u201cprovide confidence in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities dismantled trade unions that defended workers\u2019 rights, leaving people without protection, she said. \u201cWithout a worker\u2019s voice, there is no respect for labor,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s message focused on \u201cknowledge, professionalism and talent\u201d of workers, who help strengthen Belarus\u2019 economy and ensure the well-being of Belarusians, his press office reported. Human efforts remain essential despite rapid technological progress, the Belarusian ruler added, pledging to preserve Labor Day traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian economy employed 4.181 million people in March, 9,700 more than in February, with the number climbing 0.2 percent month on month, according to official data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
