April 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s aide Dzianis Ku\u010dynski had a meeting in Vilnius on April 27 with Community of Democracies Secretary General Mantas Adom\u0117nas, chairman of the Board of European Humanities University (EHU), following Belarus\u2019 move to designate the Vilnius-based university as an \u201cextremist organization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ku\u010dynski and Adom\u0117nas discussed how to preserve EHU as a university in exile for Belarusians by involving Belarusian researchers and professors more actively and giving greater prominence to Belarus and the Belarusian language as well as tapping the potential of the Belarusian academic community in exile, according to Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also discussed risks for EHU students, faculty, graduates and their families, thousands of people in total. Also under discussion was the possibility of additional scholarships, the compensation of tuition costs and arrangements that could ensure safety for those continuing their studies at EHU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ku\u010dynski and Adom\u0117nas discussed further steps to deepen cooperation following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United Transitional Cabinet and the Community of Democracies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[They] agreed to continue campaigns against transnational repression and discrimination, including extradition and deportation,\u201d the press office said. \u201c[They] also touched upon practical aspects of supporting Belarusians by simplifying legalization procedures, including accessing documents and other administrative processes that remain difficult for many Belarusians abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 14, the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office announced that the Supreme Court of Belarus had designated European Humanities University and its \u201cstructural subdivisions\u201d as an \u201cextremist organization.\u201d EHU provides support to radical politicized groups and destructive foreign NGOs and is used by state security agencies to cause damage to Belarus, D\u017amitryj Brylo\u016d, a departmental chief at the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office charged in a video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European Humanities University was founded in Minsk in 1992. The Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka government banned it in 2004, forcing it to relocate to Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 2020\/21 academic year, EHU reportedly had 680 students, mostly Belarusians. About two-thirds of them attended via online programs and resided in Belarus. They reportedly received a \u201cfully accredited European Union diploma.\u201d EHU ranked second among private universities in Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present, Belarusians reportedly account for 74 percent of EHU students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to its website, EHU receives support from the European Union, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the governments of Lithuania, the Netherlands and Iceland, and other donors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
