April 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European General Court yesterday ruled invalid a part of the sanctions imposed by the Council of the European Union against Belarusian businessman Viktar \u0160a\u016dco\u016d allegedly linked to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanctions were imposed on July 26, 2024, and extended for one year on February 24, 2025, in view of the situation in Belarus and the involvement of Belarus in Russia’s war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court\u2019s ruling does not apply to the EU Council\u2019s decision of February 26, 2026, which extended the sanctions against \u0160a\u016dco\u016d until February 28, 2027. However, following yesterday\u2019s ruling, it may be easier for \u0160a\u016dco\u016d to challenge the extension of sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Articles by independent media outlets submitted as evidence described Belarus as having numerous honorary consuls allegedly linked to scandals and close to \u0141uka\u0161enka, benefiting from privileges tied to their roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the court said this did not constitute sufficient evidence that \u0160a\u016dco\u016d, as honorary consul of the Philippines in Belarus, supported the regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
