April 17,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Belarus\u2019 interior ministry has added 21 names to its list of people it considers \u201cinvolved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total to 6,526 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two of the recently added people \u2013 Pavie\u0142 Hubienka and Alaksandar Karnacki \u2013 are serving sentences on extremism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentences of 16 recently blacklisted persons remain incomplete, which means that they may be serving non-custodial terms. They are Ivan Vosipa\u016d, Pavie\u0142 Suchavierchi, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Rabi\u010d, Viktar Papkovi\u010d, Pavie\u0142 Bahadzievi\u010d, \u015aviat\u0142ana Ilkievi\u010d, Viktoryja Mielnikava, Jana Ra\u0144ko, Ta\u0107ciana Kur\u0142vi\u010d, Kaciaryna Carova, Alaksandar \u0160amanski, Ina Ko\u0142asava, Dzianis Papo\u016d, \u015aviatas\u0142a\u016d Burmaka, Andrej Rakicki and U\u0142adzimir Kapuza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of them were convicted on extremism-related charges that authorities keep using to persecute regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list also features three designated political prisoners: Artur Hanibierzin as well as the married couple D\u017amitryj and Volha Kapuza. Earlier this year, the man and his wife were sentenced to 24 and 21 years in prison on terrorism-related charges, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from the Drahi\u010dyn district, Brest region, both lived near the border with Ukraine. They were also given heavy fines after a closed-door trial. No further details of their case are available. Last summer, Belarusian authorities blacklisted them as terrorists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
