April 15, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>A court in Chi\u0219in\u0103u has sentenced a former deputy chief of Moldova\u2019s Intelligence and Security Service to 18 months in prison for allegedly leaking secret information relating to Romania to officers of Belarus\u2019 Committee for State Security (KGB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandru B\u0103lan admitted his guilt and asked the court to speed up the hearing of his case, according to TVR Moldova<\/em>. He is currently under house arrest, and he attended his closed-door trial via a video link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u0103lan, who holds dual citizenship in Moldova and Romania, was arrested on September 8 in Timi\u0219oara on a high treason charge. According to the investigation, in 2024 and 2025, he had meetings in Budapest with Belarusian KGB officers to receive instructions and payments for his services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operation to arrest him was carried out by EUROJUST in cooperation with the intelligence services of the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 10, Moldpres<\/em> reported, citing the Moldovan foreign ministry\u2019s spokeswoman Tatiana Barac, that the ministry had declared an officer of the Belarusian embassy in Chi\u0219in\u0103u persona non grata, ordering him to leave the country within the timeframe set by diplomatic procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move came after Czechia and Poland expelled Belarusian diplomats amid an alleged crackdown on a Belarusian spy network, carried out in cooperation with the secret services of Hungary and Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Moldovan ministry did not provide any reasons behind its decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 8, the Czech Security Information Service reported that Romanian authorities had detained a former deputy director of Moldova\u2019s Intelligence and Security Service on suspicion of spying for Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Czechia reportedly expelled administrative advisor Mika\u0142aj Duk\u0161ta, a position in Belarusian embassies that is typically held by a KGB officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 foreign ministry condemned the expulsions by Prague and Warsaw, vowing to retaliate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir Zubko\u016d has served as administrative advisor at the Belarusian embassy in Moldova until recently. According to the KGB, a Polish diplomat in Moldova attempted to recruit Zubko\u016d in December 2024, for \u20ac100,000, without success.
