April 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Fertilizers “wasted on farms” could have been sold abroad for significant profit, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka told officials yesterday during a visit to the Mahilo\u016d region, voicing apparent frustration over sanctions affecting fertilizer transit through Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus also could have gained a political advantage on its neighbor: “could have got the better of these Labuses and other jerks,\u201d he said, using a slightly derogatory term “Labusy” or “Labasy” \u2012 derived from the Lithuanian word “labas” (good) frequently used in greetings \u2013 to refer to Lithuanians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler also expressed anger that his directives were not being followed. \u201cThe country is a dictatorship, orders are given, yet my subordinates are failing to implement them,\u201d he said, threatening Juryj \u0160ulejka, the deputy prime minister in charge of agriculture, and Juryj Hor\u0142a\u016d, agriculture minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician warned that Vasil Hierasima\u016d, head of the State Control Committee, \u201cwill round up people across the country and bring them to the detention center for [Interior Minister Ivan] Kubrako\u016d,\u201d adding that authorities would then \u201csort things out.\u201d \u201cNext in line will be the chairmen of the district executive committees. When I appoint them, I tell them: be presidents in your own territories. What\u2019s stopping you from governing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late March, Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da said Vilnius would not engage with Minsk unless it shows consistent \u201cneighborly goodwill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has been pushing for consultations between the two countries\u2019 foreign ministries, while Lithuania rejected direct diplomatic talks, having significantly downgraded official contacts after what it described as Belarus\u2019 rigged 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions between both countries are fuelled by cigarette smuggling disrupting operations at Lithuanian airports, irregular migration, sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilizers, Belarus\u2019 nuclear power plant and Minsk\u2019s support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
