April 14, Pozirk.<\/em> Lithuanian Foreign Minister K\u0119stutis Budrys has expressed <\/a>outrage over the designation of European Humanities University (EHU) as \u201cextremist\u201d by Belarusian authorities, calling it \u201cyet another hostile act\u201d against Lithuania and the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMinsk\u2019s move to brand the European Humanities University \u2013 an accredited Belarusian university in exile in Vilnius \u2013 an \u2018extremist organization\u2019 is outrageous,\u201d Budrys said on X. \u201cIt puts students, faculty, and families at serious risk and obstructs access to independent, unbiased education. It is yet another hostile act by the Lukashenko [\u0141uka\u0161enka] regime against Lithuania and the EU. We stand ready to back the EHU community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 14, the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office announced that the Supreme Court of Belarus had designated European Humanities University and its \u201cstructural subdivisions\u201d as an \u201cextremist organization.\u201d EHU provides support to radical politicized groups and destructive foreign NGOs and is used by state security agencies to cause damage to Belarus, D\u017amitryj Brylo\u016d, a departmental chief at the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office charged in a video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EHU was founded in Minsk in 1992. The Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka government banned it in 2004, forcing it to relocate to Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 2020\/21 academic year, EHU reportedly had 680 students, mostly Belarusians. About two-thirds of them attended via online programs and resided in Belarus. They reportedly received a \u201cfully accredited European Union diploma.\u201d EHU ranked second among private universities in Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to its website, EHU receives support from the European Union, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the governments of Lithuania, the Netherlands and Iceland, and other donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
