April 11, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Ihar Siarhiejenka, chairman of the House of Representatives, discussed prospects for cooperation in the military sphere yesterday in Naypyidaw at his meeting with Myanmar\u2019s Defense Minister Htun Aung, the Belarusian embassy in Vietnam reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian lower house\u2019s speaker is in Myanmar from April 7 to 12. The visit featured the swearing-in ceremony for Myanmar\u2019s junta chief Min Aung Hlaing. Siarhiejenka reportedly conveyed congratulations from Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka to the new head of state of Myanmar and discussed ties in the political, economic and humanitarian spheres as well as interaction within international organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk prioritizes developing the full range of relations with Myanmar, which it views as a reliable and friendly partner in Southeast Asia, Siarhiejenka told his Myanmar counterpart, U Khin Yi of the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parties discussed expanding bilateral parliamentary cooperation, including stepping up contacts through parliamentary friendship groups, and considered signing an interparliamentary cooperation agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka visited Myanmar in late November 2025. Earlier this month, the Belarusian ruler congratulated General Min Aung Hlaing on his election as president of Myanmar. On April 3, the parliament of Myanmar chose Min Aung Hlaing as the next president, formalizing his grip on political power five years after he ousted a democratically elected government. Nearly 90 percent of the lawmakers owe their loyalty to the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar\u2019s parliamentary elections, held in December and January, have been widely dismissed by Myanmar\u2019s opposition forces and Western governments as a sham designed to legitimize military rule behind a veneer of democracy. A delegation of Belarus\u2019 central election commission observed the final phase of the elections at the end of January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian officials have sought to expand ties with Myanmar lately. The country has been under military rule since a coup in early 2021, followed by a civil war that is believed to have claimed more than 90,000 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
