April 10, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Criminal proceedings have been instituted against three farm managers in the Homiel region over the death of more than 830 heads of cattle in 2025 and 2026, according to the press office of the State Control Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The companies in question are based in the Homiel, \u017d\u0142obin and Pietryka\u016d districts. Their managers allegedly failed to ensure proper conditions, diet and vaccination for cattle and to take remedial action amid mass animal mortality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State Control Committee estimated the damage at more than 920,000 rubels ($318,000 at the National Bank\u2019s official exchange rate).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were 3,865,925 heads of cattle in Belarus at the end of February 2026, 3.7 percent fewer than a year before, according to Pozirk\u2019s<\/em> analysis of data from the National Statistics Committee (Belstat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Homiel region, the cattle population reportedly dropped by 5.9 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka urged Alaksandar Raho\u017enik, the newly appointed head of the Viciebsk Regional Executive Committee, to tackle existing problems in the underperforming Viciebsk region, including livestock mortality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em> estimates that the population of bovine animals has been in decline since early 2019, when the country had 4.34 million head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, Belarus\u2019 cattle population has plunged by 24 percent during the almost 32-year rule of \u0141uka\u0161enka, a former collective farm boss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
