April 10, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarus\u2019 exiled opposition plans to stage demonstrations for \u201can independent and nuclear-free Belarus\u201d in various cities on April 26 to mark the 40th<\/sup> anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Vilnius, activists plan to organize a symbolic run to pay tribute to workers who were fighting fires and participated in decontamination efforts in affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTime has passed but the threat remains. The government in Belarus is as irresponsible and as unaccountable to the public as it was then. This is absolutely unacceptable,\u201d the organizing committee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 39th<\/sup> anniversary, participants in a demonstration in Warsaw demanded that the government decommission the nuclear power plant ant remove nuclear weapons from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The No. 4 reactor exploded at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the early hours of April 26, 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the plant is located in Ukraine, about 70 percent of the radioactive fallout from landed in Belarus, heavily contaminating one-fourth of the country, one-fifth of its agricultural land and affecting at least 7 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
