April 9, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Lithuania\u2019s Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs unanimously supported a government proposal to extend national sanctions against Russians and Belarusians until 2028, BNS <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some committee members said the current restrictions do not go far enough and called for their expansion, planning to request that the government draft new legislation broadening national sanctions against citizens of the two countries involved in the war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the conservative opposition faction Homeland Union \u2013 Lithuanian Christian Democrats have been lobbying for stricter measures, including equalizing sanctions on nationals of Russia and Belarus, suspending the issuance of new residence permits for Belarusians and restricting real estate purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, Lithuanian conservatives suggested suspending the issuance of first-time residence permits to citizens of Belarus and annulling residence permits for citizens of Belarus and Russia who have visited their home countries more than once in three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusians holding Lithuanian residence permits keep decreasing in number, totaling 49,523 on April 1. Their number dropped 7.9 percent year on year and by 21.3 percent over the past two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
