{"id":182422,"date":"2026-04-06T11:29:28","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T08:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/182422\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T11:33:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T08:33:04","slug":"latvia-reports-spike-in-irregular-crossings-via-belarus-over-past-10-days","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/182422\/","title":{"rendered":"Latvia reports spike in irregular crossings via Belarus over past 10 days"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>April 6, <em>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Latvia has not allowed at least 291 undocumented third-country foreigners to enter irregularly via Belarus over the past ten days, nearly twice the total of 156 attempted crossings reported since the year\u2019s start, according to <em>Pozirk<\/em>&#8216;s analysis of border guards&#8217; data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latvia remains the most popular target for irregular crossings into the European Union via Belarus this year, with a new daily high of 65 attempts reported on April 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of attempted irregular crossings since January, currently at 512, is 12.5 percent more than in the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prime ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Poland signed a joint declaration on February 26 to strengthen cooperation, beef up border security and respond to hybrid threats.
