2 April, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>As many as 175 individuals are seeking to run in the elections for the 80-member Coordination Council scheduled for May 11-17, the Council\u2019s press office said, stressing that there are more than two contenders for each seat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The election commission had received applications from nine political groups and has already registered the lists of candidates submitted by two of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, registration has been granted to European Choice led by Valer Mackievi\u010d and Law and Order led by Siarhiej Makar with 17 and 12 candidates, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The election commission is examining applications by \u0141atu\u0161ka and the Movement for Freedom, with 38 contenders led by Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka i Juryj Hubarevi\u010d; Vola (Freedom) with 28 contenders led by Mikita Zabuha; the United Civic Platform with 22 contenders led by Mika\u0142aj Kaz\u0142o\u016d; Va\u0161 Ho\u0142as (Your Voice) with 20 contenders led by Andrej Ko\u0142as; Khvatit boyatsia! (Stop Being Afraid) with 13 contenders led by Ta\u0107ciana Martynava; Nastup (Attack) with 13 contenders led by Lizavieta Prakop\u010dyk; and Bie\u0142arusy Dzieja\u0144nia (Belarusians of Action) with 12 contenders led by Jura\u015b Ziankovi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each registered group will be able to promote its platform and communicate with potential voters through the online platform Try S\u0142any.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents of Belarus may \u201csafely enter this site,\u201d but they should subsequently \u201cclear their history and close their tabs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coordination Council is a non-governmental body established by presidential candidate Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja in 2020 to facilitate a democratic transfer of power in Belarus. The Council originally had 64 core members with a seven-member leadership board. Amid the post-election crackdown in Belarus, many of the Council\u2019s members were arrested or forced into exile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022 and 2023, the Coordination Council was re-established abroad as a body consisting of representatives of various pro-democracy groups in exile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2024, the Council held its first direct online elections, with more than 6,700 citizens of Belarus reportedly taking part in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 28 seats, \u0141atu\u0161ka and the Movement for Freedom is currently the Council\u2019s largest political group. Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka is deputy head of the United Transitional Cabinet led by Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
