March 16, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>A conservative political group in Lithuania\u2019s parliament (Seimas) has suggested suspending the issuance of first-time residence permits to citizens of Belarus and annulling residence permits for citizens of Belarus and Russia who have visited their home countries more than once in three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Delfi<\/em>, the proposed bill of amendments to Lithuania\u2019s Law on Restrictive Measures in Connection with the Military Aggression against Ukraine would not apply to individuals who once held Lithuanian residence permits. They would be able to obtain a renewal without any restrictions. \u201cHumanitarian\u201d exceptions would also be preserved for citizens of Belarus and Russia, apparently for those facing politically motivated persecution at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill would also ban truck drivers from Belarus and Russia from bringing fuel into Lithuania in fuel tanks with a capacity of more than 200 liters. The ban would \u201cprevent possible violations of EU sanctions and the indirect support of the Russian and Belarusian regimes\u201d through the sale of that fuel in Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draft amendments to the sanctions law were submitted by members of Homeland Union \u2013 Lithuanian Christian Democrats Laurynas Kas\u010di\u016bnas, Arvydas Anu\u0161auskas, Audronius A\u017eubalis, Arvydas Pocius, and Valdas Rakutis. The Seimas is expected to extend the law for another year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authors of the bill insist that around 70 percent of the Belarusians who have arrived in Lithuania are \u201ceconomic migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusians holding Lithuanian residence permits are decreasing in number, totaling 49,778 on March 1, according to official data from Lithuania\u2019s migration department. In 2024, around 25,000 Belarusians were employed by Lithuanian long-haul trucking companies and cannot be viewed as migrants because they were not in reality residing in Lithuania, LRT<\/em> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
