March 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open a probe into alleged crimes by the regime of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka against the Belarusian people sends a strong signal that all those responsible will be held accountable, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat made this statement after the ICC announced an investigation into Lithuania\u2019s allegations that the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime has committed transboundary crimes against humanity as part of its crackdown on opponents starting in 2020.\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJustice is essential for a better, European and democratic future of Belarus,\u201d Sybiha said in a post on X. \u201cUkraine has long advocated for the regime\u2019s accountability \u2013 both for its crimes against its own people and for supporting Russia in its aggression against Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its referral to the ICC, Lithuania noted that there are sufficient grounds to believe that Belarus\u2019 security forces committed crimes against humanity under orders from high-ranking Belarusian political, security and military officials since May 1, 2020. They include deportation, persecution and other inhumane acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian justice ministry said that the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime has forcibly displaced hundreds of thousands of Belarusian citizens to Lithuania and other countries, including those neighboring Belarus, without justification under international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
