March 11, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarus should not withdraw from the European market despite the pressure of sanctions, Prime Minister Alaksandr Tur\u010dyn said at the foreign ministry\u2019s board meeting, echoing earlier statements by the Belarusian leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tur\u010dyn insisted that Belarusian-made goods are in demand in Europe. \u201cWestern businesses are far from being delighted with decisions by European institutions and are interested in cooperating with us,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is why we should actively develop contacts, not miss \u2018windows of opportunity\u2019 and do our best to not only hold our own ground but also to gain ground in the European market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged diplomats to keep up their efforts to convince \u201cEuropean partners\u201d of the \u201cfutility\u201d of sanctions and to \u201cmake the most of the emerging alternative political ideas in the European Union.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tur\u010dyn played up the \u201cstrategic\u201d partnership with Russia, stressing that cooperation within the Belarusian-Russian Union State, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Shanghai Cooperation Organizations, BRICS and other groupings should be based exclusively on \u201cBelarus\u2019 national interests\u201d and called for closer ties with distant countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tur\u010dyn described Belarusian exports as the key performance indicator for Belarusian embassies abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 23, the European Union\u2019s foreign ministers failed to agree on a new, 20th, package of sanctions against Russia timed to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The new restrictive measures, some of which targeted Belarus, were vetoed by Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, on February 26, the Council of the European Union extended existing sanctions against Belarus for another year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, 312 Belarusian citizens and 57 entities and organizations are subject to the sanctions. Their assets are frozen, EU citizens and companies are prohibited from carrying out financial operations with them, and individuals on sanctions lists are prohibited from entering the EU. In addition, economic sanctions target Belarus\u2019 financial, trade, energy, transport and other sectors \u2013 aiming to reduce the regime\u2019s revenue and prevent circumvention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
