March 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The policies and actions of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime towards Lithuania and neighboring states are likely to remain aggressive despite Belarus’ interest in restoring relations with Western countries, says the recent report by Lithuania\u2019s State Security Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual assessment of threats to Lithuanian security noted that Minsk is highly likely to signal to Vilnius a desire to restore relations, yet will show little willingness to take specific steps to reduce tensions. The report warned that Belarus is expected to deny any involvement in hostile actions against Lithuania and to spread claims that Lithuania is allegedly acting aggressively toward Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka is not likely to ease his authoritarian policies, believing that changing geopolitical circumstances could provide an opportunity for Belarus to restore relations with the West to the pre-2020 levels, the Lithuanian intelligence noted. Reprisals in Belarus are likely to continue, including persecution of \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s opponents and even people looking for alternative sources of information, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk can stop cigarette-smuggling by weather balloons, which has been causing tensions between Belarus and Lithuania since October 2025, but is reportedly allowing the activities to continue to pressure Lithuania into political talks and easing of sanctions, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts warned of additional threats to Lithuania, citing Minsk\u2019s efforts to recruit agents targeting the exiled Belarusian opposition along with the inclusion of Lithuanian nationals on \u201cextremist\u201d lists compiled by Belarusian law enforcers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian intelligence expects that Belarusian authorities will increasingly use messaging apps to recruit agents in Lithuania and gather information on the Belarusian opposition, Lithuania, and its institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
