January 25,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong><\/em> Top politicians from Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine took part in a ceremony in Vilnius on January 25 marking the anniversary of the 1863 anti-Russian uprising in these lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1863 uprising took place on the territory of what is now Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine nearly 70 years after the Russian Empire annexed these lands following the three partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the ceremony, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that Belarus still remains Russia\u2019s province and that the Belarusians have yet to fight for their freedom and independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo far, unfortunately, [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s white spitz has more rights than the people of Belarus,\u201d he said in a reference to the Belarusian ruler\u2019s pet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He expressed gratitude to Belarusian volunteers fighting alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces against the Russian invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da stressed that the \u201cinherited tradition of freedom\u2026 has forever separated our nations \u2013 Lithuanians, Poles, Ukrainians, Belarusians \u2013 from Russia, which made every effort, but failed, to break down this invisible but incredibly strong wall\u201d and expressed hope that the Belarusian pro-democracy forces will eventually win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants, including Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Belarus\u2019 opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja laid wreaths at the insurgents chapel in Rasy \u2013 the resting place of Zygmunt Sierakowski and Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski and their comrades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalino\u016dski, a leader of the uprising, has long been regarded as a national hero by both Belarusian nationalists and communists. However, in recent years, the government has downplayed his significance, even casting him in a negative light. This distortion has led to division in society, as many Belarusians continue to hold Kalino\u016dski in high regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, Belarusian officials attended the reburial of Kalino\u016dski\u2019s remains in Vilnius, emphasizing his role in the struggle for Belarusian statehood and reaffirming his status as a national hero. Deputy Prime Minister Ihar Pietry\u0161enka stressed at that event that Kalino\u016dski\u2019s rebels used the phrase \u201cI love Belarus\u201d as a password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka himself said in November 2019 that Kalino\u016dski \u201cacted on our territory, was our kin, our citizen, if I can put it this way.\u201d However, in July 2022, \u0141uka\u0161enka changed his stance, labeling the 1863 uprising as Polish and anti-Belarusian, falsely claiming that peasants supported the Russian tsarist government and fought against the rebels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His regime now views any rebellion against Russia in Belarus as Polish and anti-Belarusian. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
