{"id":172472,"date":"2026-01-21T15:00:59","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T12:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/172472\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T12:05:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T12:05:06","slug":"cichanouskaja-in-davos-calls-on-eu-to-link-lifting-of-sanctions-to-changes-in-belarus","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/172472\/","title":{"rendered":"Cichano\u016dskaja in Davos calls on EU to link lifting of sanctions to changes in Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>January 21, <em>Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The European Union sanctions should be lifted only in exchange for deeper political transformation in Belarus, beyond the release of political prisoners, opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said at a World Economic Forum (WEF) discussion in Davos, Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of Belarus, European sanctions are much stronger than American ones, she noted, citing potash restrictions which prohibit fertilizer transit and bar Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka from receiving more income even after the lifting of American sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The politician expressed her gratitude to John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus, who negotiated the release of several groups of jailed Belarusian dissidents, while calling on the EU not to copy US President Donald Trump&#8217;s policy on sanctions and citing the need for more guarantees for changes in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cichano\u016dskaja pointed out that now may not be the right time to consider lifting sanctions on Minsk, since such a move would strengthen Russia. Instead, she called for harmonizing sanctions against Minsk and Moscow, citing close ties between both countries.
