January 21, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Norway, North Macedonia and Ukraine joined the European Union Council’s decision adopted on December 15, 2025, that introduces a new criterion for sanctions on Belarus, the EU Council reported yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it,\u201d the statement<\/a> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council\u2019s additional criterion for sanctions covers individuals, companies or agencies responsible for facilitating actions or policies which undermine or threaten democracy, the rule of law, stability or security, both within the EU and in third countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new criterion also applies to actions aimed at interfering with, damaging or destroying critical infrastructure, as well as widespread or systematic actions resulting in the disruption of such infrastructure.  The EU will also be able to target the unauthorized entry into the territory of a member state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, democratic countries have imposed multiple restrictions on Belarus over human rights abuses, alleged vote rigging in the 2020 presidential election, a brutal crackdown on protesters, the forced landing of a Ryanair flight, a migration crisis at the European Union border and support for Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
