January 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> D\u017amitryj Kapuza and his wife Volha, both 36 years old, have been sentenced to 24 and 21 years in prison on terrorism-related charges, respectively, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from the Drahi\u010dyn district, Brest region, both lived near the border with Ukraine. They were also given heavy fines after a closed-door trial. No further details of their case are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last summer, Belarusian authorities blacklisted them as terrorists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago, the Committee for State Security (KGB) reportedly arrested 12 locals from the Drahi\u010dyn district on charges of smuggling explosives into Belarus. Law enforcers identified D\u017amitryj Kapuza as the group’s leader. His wife Volha and brother Alaksandar were also among the arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the footage, D\u017amitryj Kapuza is seen limping and relying on a cane, wounded from his injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KGB agents said they shot him because he \u201cresisted, tried to escape and posed a threat to the lives of the KGB officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests, Belarusian authorities routinely use terrorism and extremism charges to persecute their political opponents and silence critical voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
