January 12, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Lithuania is firmly opposed to resuming the transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers, Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da has told BNS<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician ruled out allowing the transit even if the US deploys an additional military force in the country, or for generating additional profit to boost defenses, citing a value-based approach to politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any suggestions that Vilnius could \u201csell something\u201d in exchange for a more flexible position on Belarusian fertilizers are unacceptable, Naus\u0117da stressed, noting that the European Union also supports this approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian president pledged to keep up sanction pressure on Minsk, adding that he has been discussing the issue with leaders of Latvia and Poland as well as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania banned the transit of Belarusian fertilizers in early 2022 in line with US sanctions, while the European Union adopted similar restrictions later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington announced that it will be lifting sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilizers following the meeting between Aleksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and John Coale, US special envoy to Belarus, in Minsk on December 12 and 13. The negotiations resulted in the release of 123 designated political prisoners, including prominent opposition figures and politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, the US Treasury published the general license<\/a> authorizing transactions involving the Belarusian Potash Company, potash giant Bie\u0142aruskalij and its subsidiary Agrorozkvit LLC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
