December 20, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The deployment of Russian troops on Belarusian territory poses a threat to the security of NATO countries, German MP Norbert R\u00f6ttgen has told Das Parlament<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGermany and its European neighbors started upgrading their defense and deterrence capabilities far too late,\u201d said R\u00f6ttgen, deputy chairman of the CDU\/CSU parliamentary group at the Bundestag, in charge of foreign, defence and human rights policy. \u201cWe are now racing against time to close critical gaps by procuring weapons systems, ammunition and equipment as quickly and effectively as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defenses should be boosted across the entire line of vulnerability of NATO territory, including Poland’s eastern border, the Baltic eastern border and Ukraine, he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf Ukraine were to capitulate tomorrow, we would face a completely different, immediate threat to NATO territory,\u201d R\u00f6ttgen added, pointing out that both Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine and deployment of Russian troops in Belarus threaten European security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, reports of at least 360,000 combat-ready Russian troops stationed in Belarus circulated in German media that cited Roderich Kiesewetter, a retired Bundeswehr colonel and a foreign policy expert in the CDU\/CSU parliamentary group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian defense officials later disputed these claims, stating that Russia has only several thousand troops in Belarus, primarily assigned to non-manoeuvrable units rather than large combat formations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
