December 19,<\/strong> Pozirk<\/em>.<\/em> <\/strong>Vilnius\u2019s decision to downgrade security for Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja might prompt her to leave Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, the country\u2019s former foreign minister, told LRT<\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cObviously, \u015aviat\u0142ana is a source of discomfort for the [Belarusian] regime. You probably remember how many times the then State Security Department Director Darius Jauni\u0161kis warned how many agents connected with the regime and acting in Lithuania posed a threat to \u015aviat\u0142ana and her activity in Lithuania. That was the reason she needed protection,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landsbergis noted that circumstances have deteriorated as of late, adding that he was surprised by the government\u2019s decision regardless of its motives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision \u201cbenefits [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka in the first place\u201d and is significantly detrimental for Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn a way, we are perceived as people who took the commitment to help and now renounce this commitment. We are perceived as an unreliable partner,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s team is discussing security arrangements with Lithuanian officials, LRT <\/em>reported earlier, citing the Belarusian opposition politician\u2019s aide Dzianis Ku\u010dynski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnly after understanding all details we will take further decisions. Cichano\u016dskaja and her office continue business as usual,\u201d he is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, LRT<\/em> reported that Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s security has been transferred to the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can confirm that police are taking over Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s security,\u201d said Ram\u016bnas Matonis, a spokesman for the Police Department, noting that the change will take effect \u201cin the coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
