December 9, Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>. Pavie\u0142 Muraviejka, chief of the General Staff of the Belarusian Armed Forces, has accused the West of preparing for a war at today’s meeting of the Belarusian Security Council, the defense ministry\u2019s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The West is \u201cactively pursuing measures to improve and develop its armed forces and purcase modern weapons,\u201d the official said, noting that these matters should be addressed through diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnfortunately, common sense is not prevailing in Europe at the moment,\u201d he said. \u201cLet’s hope that countries will sit down at the negotiating table and start to tone down the aggressive rhetoric and actions that we are seeing today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus \u201cremains hopeful for peace,\u201d Muraviejka added, expressing confidence that \u201cthe voice of Belarus and other sensible countries that defend peace will be heard more clearly than those who want war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official also described deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus as “a deterrent factor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s Security Council meeting focused on ensuring Belarus’ defense strategy for the following five years. Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka instructed officials to update \u201cdefensive actions\u201d so the country would be able to defend \u201cevery patch of land.\u201dof resolving these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
