December 5, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Belarusian interior ministry has added 24 more people to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activity,\u201d taking the total number of entries on the official extremist register to 6,066.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventeen of them are serving their sentences, including seven designated political prisoners, among them journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161 sentenced to four years in prison in September on charges of discrediting the state and facilitating extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maksim Fiedarovi\u010d and Fiodar Kandziranda were given three and two and a half years in prison for sharing information with the now-defunct Bie\u0142aruski Hajun initiative that monitored Russian equipment movements in Belarus between 2022 and early 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Mazur, Pavie\u0142 Karaniuchin and Alaksandar \u0141yk\u0161yn are serving prison terms for solidarity with jailed regime critics, while Alaksandar Chom\u010dyk was given 18 months in prison for allegedly inciting hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imprisoned D\u017amitryj Ka\u017eadub, Anastasija Ka\u0161\u010dyna, Kanstancin Kaburnieje\u016d, Andrej Viaro\u016dkin, Juryj Chramieje\u016d, Jahor Bujan, Jahor \u017dyburt, Raman Husejnau, Pavie\u0142 \u0160pak and Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Kruk are also among the recent additions. All were convicted on charges that authorities routinely use against their political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentences of Alaksiej Pala\u0161\u010duk, Alaksiej \u0160ul\u017eucki, Nazar \u010cajko, Ja\u016dhien Kavalo\u016d, Alena Hartanovi\u010d, Barys Chusaina\u016d and Aksanda Apanasovi\u010d remain incomplete, which means that they may be serving non-custodial terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
