November 26, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has reiterated his readiness to host Ukraine peace talks in Minsk during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek, according to the Belarusian ruler\u2019s press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian strongman has long sought a role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Over the past six months, he has held several meetings with US diplomats, during which he reportedly offered his services \u2014 including to Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy for Ukraine; US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Smith; and John Coale, the recently appointed envoy for Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, Putin recalled that Russian officials had held several meetings in Belarus with what he called \u201cthe Kyiv regime\u201d<\/strong> after Russian forces invaded Ukraine \u2014 in particular, in Homiel on February 28 and in Brest on March 3 and 7, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, at the meeting with Putin, \u0141uka\u0161enka said that his support for Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine was legally justified \u2014 \u201cwe are allies after all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka also noted he was encouraged by recent US efforts to secure a peace deal. \u201cI hope it will be OK in the end, based on recent developments. If the Americans proceed with caution \u2014 I say publicly<\/strong> what I said to them \u2014 understanding that this is a complicated matter that requires complicated solutions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talks between US and Ukrainian officials this week in Geneva and then in Abu Dhabi have resulted in Ukraine agreeing to the \u201cessence\u201d of a peace deal, after changes were made to an initial 28-point plan widely criticized as heavily slanted toward Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the new draft represented \u201cthe right approach\u201d \u2014 though serious points of contention with Russia remain. The draft and Kyiv\u2019s proposals have been submitted to the Kremlin for consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
