November 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A bipartisan group of lawmakers urged US President Donald Trump to keep pushing for the release of political prisoners in Belarus, advising the White House to be cautious in its dealings with Kremlin-aligned Belarusian ruler, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, Politico<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sens. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) and John Curtis (R-Utah), alongside Reps. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) and Joe Wilson (D-S.C.), penned a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio lauding the Trump administration for its work to free political prisoners in Belarus and encouraging more of the same. Washington brokered a deal with Minsk to free 52 prisoners in September, in return for the US. lifting some sanctions on the country, including on its national airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their letter, the lawmakers urged the Trump administration to show \u201csustained vigilance\u201d in dealings with \u0141uka\u0161enka and encouraged the State Department to continue cultivating a relationship with exiled opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichanouskaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump and \u0141uka\u0161enka have maintained a friendly dynamic, with the US leader often speaking highly of his Belarusian counterpart. But he has also continued to push for the release of more prisoners. Trump last weekend tapped John Coale, who helped negotiate the prisoner deal, as special envoy to the country. Coale \u201cis going for an additional 50,\u201d released prisoners Trump said in a social media post at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
