October 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The neighboring European Union countries have not allowed at least 2,531 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus since October 1, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of attempts surged by nearly 60 percent compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia recorded a 75-percent increase in attempts compared to October 2024, with 730 crossings, while attempts to enter Poland grew by 55 percent to 1,656 and Lithuania, by 41 percent to 145.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, the EU has thwarted at least 40,420 irregular crossings via Belarus, 20.6 percent more year on year and 11.4 percent more than the total for all of 2024. Most of the attempts \u2013 28,066 \u2013 targeted Poland. Latvia reported 10.939 attempts and Lithuania, 1,415.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s number of irregular border crossings is roughly in line with 2023 levels, when 42,078 attempts were recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
