October 10, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s office in Vilnius is still waiting for details of security arrangements from Lithuanian authorities, its staff member Dzianis Ku\u010dynski has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comment comes after Lithuanian officials announced a decision to downgrade security for Cichano\u016dskaja in a move that drew an immediate backlash, including from former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The office released a video address yesterday, in which Cichano\u016dskaja said that the office continues operation for the common goals of securing the release of political prisoners, advancing Belarusians\u2019 interests and attracting international attention to Belarus\u2019 problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius reportedly transferred responsibility for Cichano\u016dskaja security from the Security Service to the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau, which typically handles witness protection. The change took effect on October 1, with a transition period until November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am dismayed to realise that Lithuania can no longer be considered a trustworthy partner for people looking for shelter from tyranny,\u201d said former Foreign Minister Landsbergis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian authorities have not commented on arrangements in order not to compromise the security of the protected person, but Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginien\u0117 told journalists on October 8 that security was modified based on the level of threats, stressing that Vilnius will continue to protect the Belarusian pro-democracy leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s office said it had been given a very short notice of the new security arrangements and had been forced to suspend operations to make necessary adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team discussed the issue with Foreign Minister K\u0119stutis Budrys, who reportedly reaffirmed Lithuania\u2019s unchanged position towards Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime and assured that Cichano\u016dskaja remains an official guest of the Lithuanian government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
