{"id":159191,"date":"2025-10-08T19:54:29","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T16:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/159191\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"greek-catholics-hit-hardest-by-re-registration-in-belarus","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/159191\/","title":{"rendered":"Greek Catholics hit hardest by re-registration in Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>October 8, <em>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> After 3,426 religious communities have obtained re-registration in Belarus, their total number has decreased by 4.6 percent, said Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija (Christian Vision).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing the Belarusian authorities\u2019 official report for the United Nations\u2019 Universal Periodic Review, the initiative said the number of denominations has remained unchanged at 25; while the number of communities has decreased by 4.7 percent to 3,257; and \u201corganizations of general religious significance\u201d declined by 2.3 percent to 169.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Belarusian Greek Catholic Church\u2014Christians who, through the Union of Brest (1595\u201396), entered full communion with the See of Rome while keeping their Byzantine liturgy in the Church Slavonic language\u2014was \u201cmost severely\u201d affected by the re-registration. It faced unprecedented political pressure and was unable to declare enough parishes for registering as a religious association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For that reason, the Belarusian Greek Catholics lost access to \u201ca whole range of aspects of religious freedom, which in today\u2019s Belarus are reserved only for religious associations.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October 8, Pozirk.
