October 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus’ pro-democracy politician \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja met with Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot, the French minister for Europe and foreign affairs, today in Paris to discuss steps to secure the release of Belarusian political prisoners, according to her press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes after human rights defenders added 77 people to a long list of political prisoners last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja and Barrot also talked about France\u2019s policy toward Belarus, the military-political situation in the region, support for the independent media and visas for Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader thanked France for its consistent support and the work of its special envoy for Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeparately, I would like to express my gratitude for the visa assistance. Staying mobile is vital for those who live in Belarus. I called on the minister to expand the issuance of visas, as it gives Belarusians the opportunity to connect with Europe and feel like part of the free world,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the meeting, a reception was held on the occasion of the third meeting of the parliamentary alliance For a Democratic Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the same day in Paris, Cichano\u016dskaja’s associate, Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka, met with French Justice Minister G\u00e9rald Darmanin to discuss ways to bring Belarusian officials to account for the transfer of Ukrainian children to Belarus for indoctrination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja visited Paris on October 6\u20137 at the invitation of the French National Assembly president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
