October 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lithuania is downgrading the physical security detail for Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, who lives with her family in Vilnius, LRT <\/em>reported, citing Foreign Minister K\u0119stutis Budrys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After arriving in Lithuania five years ago, the politician was granted 24\/7 security at home and abroad. The detail, on par with that of ambassadors and the European Union\u2019s senior officials, cost an estimated \u20ac1 million annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsibility for Cichano\u016dskaja’s safety has been transferred from the Security Service to the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau, which is usually in charge of witness protection. The move was reportedly implemented on October 1 with a transition period until November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian officials have refused to comment on the decision, noting that comments may compromise the security of the protected person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
