September 26, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja on Thursday called for a new “Arria Formula” meeting to be held at the UN Security Council regarding crimes against humanity in her country and the growing Russian threat to its independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja spoke at a discussion on Belarus with 40 diplomats, primarily from European countries, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that the previous three such meetings\u2014informal sessions of UN Security Council members, named after Venezuelan diplomat Diego Arria, who called the first one in 1992\u2014co-organized by more than 30 countries in 2020 and 2021, were effective and productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician asked EU diplomats to initiate and co-sponsor a new resolution on Belarus in the Third Committee of the General Assembly. She also urged them to support the current mandates on Belarus: the powers of the UN special rapporteur and the UN Group of Independent Experts. Ending any of these mandates would send a dangerous signal of impunity and weaken the protection of victims, she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician visited the USA from September 22 to 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She met with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Czech President Petr Pavel, Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also had conversations with European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and the foreign ministers of Austria, Germany, Iceland, Poland, Ukraine and Croatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also met with Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy for Ukraine who had visited Minsk in June to meet with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, as well as with Republican Congressman Joe Wilson and Gediminas Varvuolis, Lithuania\u2019s ambassador to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
