September 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> European lawmakers have nominated Belarus\u2019 prisoner Andrej Pa\u010dobut (Andrzej Poczobut) for the prestigious Sakharov Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe is a journalist, essayist and blogger from the Polish minority in Belarus, known for his criticism of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime and has become a symbolic figure in the struggle for freedom and democracy in the country,\u201d the European Parliament said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pa\u010dobut was repeatedly arrested. After being detained in 2021, he was sentenced to eight years in a penal colony. He has been periodically held in solitary confinement without proper medical care. MEPs demanded his immediate and unconditional release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year, the European Parliament awards the Sakharov Prize to outstanding people and organizations who defend human rights and fight for democracy and the rule of law. This year\u2019s nominees include journalists in Palestine, Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal and Budapest Pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
